ASHMORE, R. Walter R. WALTER ASHMORE R. Walter Ashmore, 79, of Atlanta died Tuesday, February 18, 2014 following an extended illness. He leaves his wife of 52 years, Ann (Shirah) Ashmore; his daughters, Arlene Vinci, Rhonda Hammans and John; Sarah Margaret Matthews; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Born and raised in Graceville, Florida, the son of Jack and Gracie Ashmore, he attended Emory University, where he served as president of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He graduated from Emory in 1959 with a bachelor of business administration. He served in the United States Armed Forces during the Korean War before beginning his professional life in insurance and later real estate where he devoted most of his career. In the late 60’s, he and his brother Jack Ashmore founded Ashmore Realty Company, primarily developing and managing properties in metro Atlanta and on St. Simons Island. He joined Cousins Properties in 1985 and after retiring in 1994, joined the Cousins family office where he served in many capacities, including President of East Lake Golf Club, President of Nonami Enterprises, President of East Lake Housing Corporation, and most recently, Director of Real Estate Operations for the Cousins’ family foundations and personal interests. He played a key role in the revitalization of the East Lake community, overseeing the renovation and expansion of the East Lake Golf Club course and Clubhouse, as well as the construction of the East Lake Villages apartments, Charlie Yates Golf Course, YMCA, and Drew Charter School. He also managed the renovation of the YMCA , adding space for the East Lake Early Learning Academy. His last project was to oversee the design and planning of the Charles R. Drew Senior Academy, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open later this year. An avid outdoorsman, Walter was an expert hunter and fisherman. He had a passion for golf, which he played most of his life and was a fervent college football fan (Go Dawgs!). He will be especially remembered for his quick wit, love of wildlife and loyalty to family and friends. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 22nd at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mount Vernon Highway, Sandy Springs, GA. Relatives and friends are welcome at the service and the reception immediately following at H. M. Patterson & Son-Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road, Sandy Springs, GA. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Georgia Wildlife Federation , 11600 Hazelbrand Rd., Covington, GA 30014.
